If you take a 10-second look at my Instagram gallery, you’ll quickly realise I’m a bit of a bookworm. Okay, a big bookworm. And loads of you are too.
Curling up with a big mug of tea and a book is such an important part of my day and life for a number of reasons: reading is a creative, positive form of escapism; it calms the mind and body; and it educates, inspires and empowers.
I always share what book I’m reading on Instagram but I’d never thought about creating an Instagram Book Club until a few of you lovely followers messaged me and asked if I would start one. I immediately felt excited about the possibility of reading along (and deeply engaging) with an online community — the reason why I fell in love with Instagram in the first place — and sharing our thoughts along the way.
So, let’s do this. The Silverspies Book Club, where we pick a book, read it and share our thoughts on Instagram as we make our way through.
How it works
I don’t want to create rigid guidelines as reading should be fun and without strings attached, but here are some general things to know so we can get this Book Club properly started.
First step: I’ll announce the book we’ll be reading on my Instagram Stories, feed and a blog post. I’ll include the blurb. In the week following, it’s time for everyone to buy or loan the book — I’ll aim to choose books which are readily available to everyone around the world.
Then it’s time to get stuck into the book!
To make sure all bookworms are connected as we read along, share Instagram posts (whether it’s a photo of you reading, a favourite page/quote, a nice flatlay with a tea and biscuits — what ever you like!) with the hashtag #silverspiesbookclub. In your caption you can share your thoughts on the book so far (without revealing spoilers), about the characters, what you’re liking/not liking, etc. I’ll also ask questions in my own posts as I read so we can chat.
Feel free to follow the hashtag and comment on others’ posts. I’ll be checking #silverspiesbookclub, commenting on your posts and also sharing my favourite photos in my Stories, so share away!
After one month is up (and hopefully we’ll have all finished reading the book), we can share our last thoughts and move onto the next book.
Alright, what’s the first book for Silverspies Book Club?
The first book will be Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman.
Here’s the blurb:
Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend.
Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. Except, sometimes, everything.
One simple act of kindness is about to shatter the walls Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.
Change can be good. Change can be bad. But surely any change is better than fine?
“An outstanding debut about loneliness and the power of a little kindness.”
“Unforgettable, brilliant, funny and life-affirming.”
I bought my copy from The Book Depository (this is an affiliate link but of course feel free to buy your copy anywhere you like).
To recap, during the month:
- Post photos and hashtag #silverspiesbookclub so other readers and I can find your posts
- Share your thoughts about the book in your Instagram captions and in the comments of my Instagram posts (be careful not to post spoilers!)
- If you’ve already read the book, that’s okay! Use the hashtag to share your thoughts anyway and photos for a chance to be featured on my Stories.
Please message me if you have any questions. I love hearing from you. Happy reading!
