Sometimes you need to get away — from the traffic, skyscrapers and busy city life — and surround yourself with nature and stillness. And our trip to Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat was the perfect place for this.
Located in the Tweed Valley hinterland in northern NSW, Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat is a beautiful getaway surrounded by lush rainforest. Merging luxury with romance, it’s a place where individuals or couples can recharge and reconnect in one of the retreat’s 10 architect-designed bungalows. Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat is a popular place for honeymoons, anniversaries, proposals and birthdays, with the retreat’s peace, privacy and rainforest scenery a perfect romantic backdrop.
Rian and I travelled to the retreat to immerse ourselves in nature and calmness, to get away from our busy lives for a few days and spend time together relaxing, going for walks and capturing our adventure on our cameras. And we’re so happy to have stayed at Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat.
As we drove from Brisbane, down south on the highway and then west into the hinterland, we already felt the stresses of life melt away. The high rises and industrial scene disappeared, and replaced it first with the rural landscape of Murwillumbah, and finally with the pristine rainforest. The world wasn’t grey or angular or filled with obtrusive advertisements — the world was vibrantly green, lush and untamed.
We drove along the windy roads towards the retreat and admired the beauty of all life here, the farm animals and the greenery. And when we arrived at Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat we knew we were exactly where we wanted to be for our getaway.
After we met with the lovely staff and checked-in, we made our way higher in the valley to our private architect-designed luxury lodge: The Springbrook Lodge. As we walked in we were completely blown away. The luxury lodge is a beautiful, modern open space overflowing with light from the floor-to-ceiling windows. I practically swooned over the freestanding solid marble bath and the solar heated infinity pool.
The north-east facing structure blended in with the surrounding greenery, complementing the breathtaking views overlooking Mount Springbrook and the surrounding rainforest. It felt as though we were alone, in this space full of wonder and peace.
That afternoon we settled in to the Springbrook Lodge, unpacking our things and taking in the surroundings while relaxing in the gorgeous marble bath. In the evening we made pasta in the contemporary self-contained kitchen and watched a movie, all the while revelling in the overwhelming sense of serenity and relaxation.
We woke early the following morning and sat on the deck in our soft bathrobes, sipping on tea and coffee. The sun shone bright and the sky azure blue. For breakfast we had the Crumpet Breakfast Basket, consisting of toasted crumpets with fresh stewed rhubarb, maple syrup and mascarpone, with fruit juice and fresh fruit on the side. The rainforest views were the perfect backdrop to the simple yet delicious breakfast.
After breakfast we made our way to the orchard nearby, basking in the sun and picking some oranges from the beautiful citrus trees. After lunch back in the lodge, we explored the pristine rainforest on the walking tracks, the sound of babbling brooks an incredible soundtrack to our walk. We stopped at the hammocks hanging over the creek (we both nearly fell in and had a great laugh) and savoured the beautiful old trees towering over us.
That evening we were lucky to witness one of the Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat specialty: the ‘100 Candle Surprise’ Marriage Proposal & Romantic Package. The lodge becomes lit with one hundred candles and the table is beautifully set with a white tablecloth, a dozen red roses, Belgian chocolates and Moet champagne. The ambience was idyllic and magnificent, made perfect with any of the Delicious Dinners or Gourmet Hampers the Retreat provides.
For a truly relaxing, cosy evening, we lit the double-sided fire, listened to music on the surround sound and watched a movie on the couch. When the night’s darkness set in, we adventured down to the creek and marvelled at the glow worms — viridescent and phosphorescent in the pure black of night, imitating the starry galaxies beyond us.
The next morning I woke up early and experienced something magical. We were in the clouds: the sky had opened and big drops of rain fell peacefully to the rainforest. The low-lying clouds pulled breath from the heart of the rainforest. It was truly mystical and majestic. Then the morning rain ceased, allowing the golden sun to pour its radiance onto the rainforest.
For breakfast we enjoyed the Healthy Breakfast Basket: Brookfarm toasted macadamia muesli with fresh seasonal fruit and yogurt, and toast with rainforest jam, lemon myrtle honey and fresh fruit juice.
With slightly heavy hearts, we packed up our things, said goodbye to the enchanting rainforest and the beautiful luxury lodge we called home for two nights, and went on our way back home to Brisbane.
Staying at Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat was an unforgettable experience. From the awe-inspiring lodge to being immersed in the tropical landscape, from the rainforest walks to the glowworms — Crystal Creek is a beautiful getaway for any couple or person. Their Romantic Packages are magnificent and it’s no wonder over 200 couples get engaged at the Retreat every year. I look forward to returning to Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat one day again soon.
