Happy Friday! Here are my Friday favourites for this week….
Listening to: Childish Gambino. I’ve been a fan of Donald Glover since I began watching Community (i.e. the best TV show), but I only recently properly gotten to his music and have really been enjoying it. His adorable dreamy looks aside, I haven’t been able to get ‘3005’, ‘Sober’, ‘Telegraph Ave’ and ‘Sweatpants’ out of my head.
Currently reading: I recently read All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer and I think it’s become one of my favourites. The way Doer tells the story is incredibly captivating and beautiful. I really have a thing for simple, poetic prose that quietly opens up an imaginary, magical world which you never want to leave.
Admiring: Sharyn Cairns’s hauntingly good food photography. I can’t stop swooning at those rich dark tones, moody lighting and bold colours.
Eating: My chocolate hazelnut spread on and in everything. I cannot resist it I tell you!
Thinking about: My trip to Sydney last month; my beautiful friends, delicious food, the welcoming turquoise water, the vivid Blue Mountains, falling in love with the city, the sadness of returning home.
Generally relishing: The weather slowly becoming more autumnal – I live for those crisp and cosy mornings. Triangles of morning light creeping through my curtains in the morning. Tea in bed. Reading novels without feeling guilty. Trying new cuisines with friends. The peace and quiet of early morning.
Happy Friday, folks!
Listening to: In keeping with summer, old Miami Horror and Cut Copy have been on repeat as we drive to the clear azure ocean and drive home with sleepy eyes and salt on our skin.
Currently reading: I’ve been reading quite a few books over the past month, some great, some not so great (ahem, Gone Girl). Of the ones that stand out, Past the Shallows, another novel by Australian writer Favel Parrett, was just beautiful. I’m also currently finishing off The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan, which I thought I would enjoy more than I have, but it’s nevertheless an interesting, albeit harrowing read. If you’re a fellow avid reader and are interested in other books I have read, you can find me on Goodreads.
Admiring: This Rawsome Vegan Life. Filled with endless mouthwatering raw treats and delicious wholesome food, Emily’s blog has quickly become one of my favourites.
Eating: Waffles for days! My boyfriend gifted me a waffle iron for Christmas and we’ve been enjoying my Healthy Waffles for breakfast so often I’ve lost count. Fluffy on the inside, crisp on the outside, and topped with fresh summer fruit and maple syrup. Perfect.
Thinking about: New projects and new recipes. I have some amazing recipes coming soon (hint: a delicious salted caramel dessert) that I’m so excited to share with you.
Generally relishing: My brand new Vitamix. Yes, I finally caved. I’ve been coveting one of these for years, so when my blender broke and I was able to exchange and upgrade to a Vitamix, I couldn’t refuse. Since my purchase I’ve become a blending fanatic. Green smoothies (no more pieces of spinach!), sorbet, hummus, homemade nutella, soup, pesto, smoothie bowls – everything. I get excited just writing this. So if you’ve been thinking about buying a Vitamix but don’t know whether it’s worth it, I can tell you with absolute assurance: it is.
Happy Friday, folks!
Listening to: Kinfolk’s music playlists on 8tracks. In line with Kinfolk’s general superlativeness, the people at Kinfolk have created the most impeccable collections of music. Complete with a non-tacky Christmas playlist. Thank you Daria for introducing me to this!
Currently reading: When the Night Comes by Australian writer Favel Parrett. My appetite for Australian literature has increased tenfold after reading Jasper Jones. I’m a big fan of Tim Winton and Mark Zusack, but for some reason I often forget how truly amazing Australian writers are. When the Night Comes is a quiet, moving novel. I feel myself pausing over many of its sentences, poring on their subtle beauty.
Admiring: Deliciously Ella. I’ve been a big fan of Ella’s blog and her incredible recipes for a long time (don’t get me started on those sweet potato brownies), but I recently discovered her delightful, inspiring YouTube videos and it seems I’m hooked all over again!
Wearing: This Blesse’d Are The Meek BC Shirtdress. The lovely folks at the label sent me the dress as a Christmas gift and I’ve been genuinely loving it since. Minimalist, casual, black – it ticks all my boxes.
Eating: Endless bowls of granola with yogurt and summer fruit. And Christmas treats, of course. It’s sweltering here in Brisbane, so I’ve been putting a summer twist on traditional Christmas desserts, including these Mini Raw Gingerbread Men and this Pecan Pie Smoothie.
Thinking about: How important it is to realise that we don’t need to do it all. Rest, breathe, get out in the fresh air. Do what makes you happy, not what others expect you to do.
Generally relishing: Slowing down. This year has been a whirlwind of uni and life stresses, and it’s taking more time than I expected to recover. Good food, yoga, the ocean and books do wonders.
Listening to: Tora. I don’t know how I happened upon Tora’s SoundCloud, but I’m overjoyed that I did. Their chilled, beautiful vibes remind me of that feeling you get when you have just come from from a late night adventure with your crush.
Currently reading: Jasper Jones by Australian writer Craig Silvey. I was hooked by the first page (don’t you love when that happens?) and I am really enjoying the characters, storyline and Silvey’s beautiful and easy-to-read writing. If you love page turners give this book a go.
Admiring: A House in the Hills. I may or may not have Pinned nearly every recipe from this amazing blog. Let’s just say that my ‘to-cook/bake’ list has become very long.
Wearing: My lovely Hobes in Duckegg Blue. These babies have hardly left my feet; they are perfect for this scorching Brisbane heat and pair well with any outfit.
Eating: My deliciously easy chocolate chip cookies. Sweet watermelons and perfectly ripe mangos. And pizza. Specifically, organic pizza from one of my favourites cafes in Brisbane, Sol Natural Foods.
Thinking about: The fact that I have just completed my four-year long double degree. After four long years of endless assignments, tears of stress and moments of self-doubt, I’m positively brimming with happiness and excitement!
Generally relishing: Time to just relax and read a novel without feeling guilty about not doing uni work. Drinking the new T2 Flutterby tea range; I love making a big batch, cooling it in the fridge and enjoying it ice cold.
Listening to: Alt-J’s new album This Is All Yours on repeat. ‘Nara’, ‘Foothills’, ‘Bloodflood Pt. II’ particularly make my heart sing.
Reading: Kinfolk. I was very late to jump on the Kinfolk bandwagon (for no reason other than I couldn’t seem to find it in bookstores or newsagents), but I bought my first issue online and I’m completely hooked. The quality of writing, photography and design is nonpareil.
Admiring: Oh, Ladycakes food blog. Do check it out, it’s all kinds of delicious.
Wearing: high-waisted denim shorts and cropped, lightweight tops. Yep, spring has officially sprung here in Australia.
Eating: açaí bowls topped with an abundance of fruit and granola. Any kind of pasta — pesto, vegan alfredo, puttanesca, you name it.
Thinking about: graduating from university at the end of the year and travelling. Just travelling.
Generally relishing: Glasshouse candles, my soft linen Cultiver bedsheets, growing fresh herbs, hot yoga, getting a good night’s sleep.
I’d love to know, what are your favourites of the moment?
