Located in a bright, colourful warehouse full of produce, Charlie’s Raw Squeeze is an oasis of fresh, vegan and mouthwatering acai bowls, smoothie bowls, smoothies and raw treats.
Charlie’s Fruit Market has been providing fresh produce for over 20 years, but since last year Charlie’s is offering something new: Charlie’s Raw Squeeze, a health food bar boasting a range of delicious bowls, juices, salads and treats.
In an attempt to cater to the blossoming health scene — as well as differentiate from mass supermarket chains — owners + brothers Johnny and Michael have created a haven where health-conscious folk can come to buy local produce and enjoy healthy, vegan and fresh treats at the same time.
The ingenious idea of combining a produce store with a health bar has dramatically drawn in swarms of customers. And for good reason too. The acai bowls and smoothies are high-quality, generous, affordable and delicious.
Using fruit straight from the store’s shelves, Charlie’s Raw Squeeze offers a number of Bowls, including the classis Superfood Acai Bowl, a Snickers Bowl, Dragon Fruit Bowl and Mango Bowl — not to mention a mouthwatering selection of smoothies and freshly made juices.
We were lucky enough to try a huge range of items from the menu, beginning with the Superfood Acai Bowl and the Green Bowl. Topped with a tower of fresh kiwi, banana, strawberries, star fruit, coconut flakes, cacao nibs, blueberries and housemade granola, the bowls were impressive to say the least.
The Superfood Acai Bowl was the standout with its smooth + velvety base, a bottom layer of strawberry slices (such a nice surprise!) and the granola crumble.
The Green Bowl — made from blended kiwi, banana, fresh greens, coconut + coconut water — was a refreshing bowl with less sweetness. While not as smooth or indulgent as the Superfood Acai Bowl, the Green Bowl is great for those aiming to sneak in their greens.
Charlie’s Nice Cream is a dream. Made simply from whipped frozen bananas, the Nice Cream is topped with housemade vegan chocolate Ice Magic sauce and your choice of fresh berries or a raw treat.
The Nice Cream is deliciously creamy and sweet, with the chocolate sauce adding crunch as it sets over the top. The berries are a lovely, fresh topping, while the raw Peanut Butter slice added a wonderful level of indulgence. Charlie’s Nice Cream truly tastes like a naughty dessert and is worth the drive there for this dessert alone.
We also tried the Choc Bananarama Smoothie and the Lean Green Cleansing Machine juice. Hands down, the smoothie was the best smoothie I’ve ever tried in Brisbane: it tasted just like a chocolate thickshake and was topped with goji berries, granola crumble, cacao nibs and coconut flakes. The Green Machine — made with kale, cucumber, celery, apple and lemon — was wonderfully refreshing and delicious.
And of course, the raw treats. The front cabinet is packed with raw treats and healthy baked cakes of every flavour: Ferrero Rocher, Peanut Butter, Caramel, Salted Caramel, Snickers, Chocolate, Rainbow… I could go on but I bet we’re all drooling on our keyboards already. It goes without saying that each dessert we tried were all very, very delicious.
On top of all of this, the service at Charlie’s Raw Squeeze is as bright and welcoming as the healthy bowls they serve. Open late until 10pm six nights of the week. Charlie’s Raw Squeeze is well worth the drive out of the city — I know I’ve already made a late night drive over there to satisfy my Nice Cream craving.
